History of Massage
Massage is a scientific method of manipulating the soft tissues of the body for specific effects.
The word “massage” originates from the Arabic word “Mass” or “Mass’h” which means to press gently.
Therapeutic massage is a healing art that dates back to the Chinese in 3000 BC. The Chinese discovered that applying pressure to the specific point was very effective. These techniques were developed and called “amma”. It is from here that the acupressure and acupuncture was developed.
Massage techniques pet to Japan and similar practices for applying pressure to specific joints were developed and called to “tsubo”. Tsubo has recently regained recognition and popularity and is now known as “Shiatsu”.
The traditional Indian life science “Ayurveda” is one of the oldest medicines known to man. It’s guiding principle are said to have been handed down from the Hindu gods. Ayurvedic medicine is still widely practiced today in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Ayurvedic medicine is a complete health care system and involves detoxification, diet, exercise, use of herbs and techniques to improve mental and emotional health.
The Greeks and Romans Incorporated massage into everyday life. The Greeks in encourage physical fitness and regular sporting events were organised. Massage was used before events to improve performance and after events to relieve fatigue and aid recovery. The Romans build the large private and public baths and those who were wealthy would use these daily for cleansing, exercising, relaxing and socialising. Servants were always in attendance with oils and creams to massage their masters when required.
